We are nearing the completion of an addition and renovation of a 1980's post-modernist structure on Chicago's Northwest side. The existing monolithic masonry building was originally constructed as a sculpture artist's studio, with a barrel-vaulted central space for manipulating massive pieces of steel. Conservation and restoration of the sensitive, post-industrial landscape is ongoing.
The studio has since been converted to a residence, which we've expanded with a splayed rectangular volume that now houses the primary domestic functions. The original workshop space has been entirely restored and reinvented to showcase the client's notable collection of modern art. Yet, Nature is still the centerpiece, and the sister buildings connect, via monumental glazed openings, to a fabulous green garden.
